Meeting Recap 12/03/2020

VHS UNICEF had its last meeting of the 2020 year and fall semester! It is unbelievable to think that we are already transitioning into a new year and semester with our expanding UNICEF family!

We discussed new plans for the next semester, which include:

  • Safety Package Fundraiser: Will put into effect after winter break!

  • Collaborations with other clubs

  • Other events: guest speakers, officer elections

  • And more!

We then transitioned into watching a video on our December theme: Ending Violence Against Children!

We also were able to reflect on more facts surrounding and pushing this #ENDviolence campaign such as that :

  • Half of students aged 13-15, about 150 million, report having experienced peer violence

  • Globally, the cost of violence against children adds up to US $7 trillion a year

  • Nearly 720 million children live in countries where they are not protected from corporal punishment

Our club officers then proceeded to show videos to honor December 1st, World AIDS Day as it is a disease that has a huge prevalent history and one of the most important advocacy causes in UNICEF.

We were able to see how UNICEF helps respond to HIV cases by focusing on pregnant women, mothers, infants, children, and adolescents. They also heavily increase HIV testing especially for infants to provide faster HIV results and work on prevention methods (i.e. being able to start treatment earlier and reduce mortality rates in these groups hugely affected by HIV).

Finally, UNICEF club came together and concluded the meeting with a Kahoot quizzing on different facts about UNICEF and even the UNICEF officer board!

We wish everyone well into the year 2021! Happy holidays and happy new year!
