Hi everyone!! We had our first meeting of the semester today, so here's a quick recap:
1. We have many exciting plans for this semester!! Our monthly themes will be End Human Trafficking (January), The Refugee Crisis (February), Gender Equality (March), and Access to Water (April). We are also hoping to host a benefit concert in spring, and have more discussions, outreach events, and community service opportunities. :)
2. Officer applications will be available in March and we'll try to announce the officers for the 2019-2020 school year before spring break!
3. Today we talked about the importance of preventing human trafficking. We played a Kahoot to learn about some basic facts and then watched this UNICEF video about one refugee girl's experience being trafficked. We also discussed how UNICEF is helping combat human trafficking, and what to do if you suspect that someone you know/meet is being trafficked. It's important to note that although human trafficking is prevalent in underdeveloped countries, it can occur anywhere in the world, including wealthy American suburbs such as Santa Clarita. It's important to stay safe and be aware of your surroundings no matter where you are. The National Human Trafficking Hotline is 1-888-373-7888.
There will be no school and no meeting next Monday, because of MLK Day. Our next meeting is going to be on January 28th in Room 516 at lunch. Remember to follow our social media (@valenciaunicef on Instagram and Twitter) to keep up with club updates and pictures. See you in two weeks!
